Our own wedding was very personal, we even made our own rings
Our own wedding was very personal – we even made our own rings
When we were planning our wedding, we wanted it to feel like ours. Nothing particularly grand or extravagant – just a day that reflected who we were, the things we enjoyed and the life we were going to build together.
That extended to our wedding rings.
Rather than simply choosing a pair from a jeweller’s display cabinet, we decided to make them ourselves. It became a lovely little part of the story of our wedding, and one that gave the rings a meaning that went far beyond what they looked like.
There is something rather special about making something with your own hands that you are going to wear for the rest of your life.
We found a maker who ran day-long courses and she guided us, working with the metal and gradually shaping the rings. It wasn’t about creating something perfectly polished or following the latest wedding trend. It was about making something together – something with our fingerprints, our decisions and our time invested in it.
And that’s one of the things I love about weddings.
The things that make a wedding memorable aren’t necessarily the expensive details or the things you’ve seen in a hundred other wedding magazines. Sometimes they’re the small, personal decisions that mean something to the two of you.
For us, our wedding rings are one of those things.
Every time I look at mine, I don’t just see a ring. I remember making it, the time we spent doing it and the decision we made to create something that would become part of our lives together..
Making your wedding your own
When you’re planning a wedding, it’s very easy to get caught up in what you’re supposed to have. There are endless choices, traditions, trends and suggestions about how your wedding should look.
But you don’t have to do it that way.
Your wedding can be wonderfully simple, completely unconventional or somewhere in between. You can keep the traditions that mean something to you and forget the ones that don’t.
And if making your own wedding rings isn’t for you, that’s absolutely fine too!
The important thing is that the choices you make feel like your choices.
Looking back, making our rings was a small part of our wedding, but it’s one of those details that has stayed with us. And perhaps that’s the best reason for doing something a little differently: not because it’s unusual, but because it becomes part of your story.
