The New Forest Welcomes the Green Man and Lady

The New Forest Green Man Returns to Burley

The New Forest Green Man Parade returned to Burley on 9th May 2026, building on the remarkable success of its first two years and drawing its largest crowd yet. What began as an effort to revive a forgotten local tradition has rapidly become one of the most distinctive community celebrations in the New Forest, bringing together folklore, history, music and a shared connection to the natural world.

A Procession Through Burley Village

Setting off from Burley Manor at 10am, the parade wound its way through the heart of the village, led by the Green Man and Green Lady. Along the route, participants and spectators enjoyed one of the event’s most entertaining moments as the legendary Brusher Mills was called upon to clear snakes from the path before the procession could continue. This playful nod to local New Forest folklore delighted the crowds and reinforced the parade’s deep roots in the stories and traditions of the area.

Blessings at New Forest Cider

As in 2025, the procession concluded at New Forest Cider, where blessings were offered in honour of the Green Man and the spirit of the land. The venue once again proved an ideal gathering place, allowing participants and visitors to come together in celebration. Organisers estimated that around 1,000 people either took part in or watched the event during the day, a remarkable increase from previous years and clear evidence that the New Forest Green Man Parade has captured the imagination of both local residents and visitors alike. With growing support from businesses, performers and the wider community, the future of this unique New Forest tradition looks brighter than ever.

Music, Dance and Celebration in the Pubs of Burley

The 2026 parade featured its strongest programme of traditional entertainment to date. Four Morris sides joined the celebrations, filling Burley’s pubs, The Queens Head and The Burley Inn, with music, colour and energy. The New Forest Medlars were joined by Red Stag’s Morris from Southampton, Hobo Morris from Wimborne and Madder Mill Molly, each contributing their own style and character to the day. Their performances created a lively atmosphere throughout the village and helped connect modern audiences with centuries-old customs.

Life really is pretty good despite the horrors we are putting upon our wonderful world. I have the most wonderful wife who really makes me understand the value and meaning of marriage. And there is so much that brings joy - my dog, my cat, my hens, living in the countryside, folk music, ceildhs, going to gigs, sitting reading, watching the fire in the wood burner, the smell of air-dried laundry, the chatter of the birds in the garden, the swifts of summer and the snows of winter, the first butterfly of spring, the first frost of autumn, me, yes, me, I love me (and I'm proud to say that becuase it took a while), the feel of the summer air on my skin on the beach, sitting in the middle of the forest... and much much more. Life is wonderful and I wish that for you too.
