Deep into the Wildwood: A Model’s Perspective

Every session in the forest is a collaboration — not just of ideas, but of trust, intuition, and presence. After photographing Nikita for my Deep into the Wildwood series, she shared some reflections on the experience and the images themselves. Her words felt too honest and too generous not to give space to.

Being Truly Seen in Front of the Camera

One of the most meaningful things a subject can feel during a portrait session is that they are genuinely seen. Not styled, posed, or directed into something external — but recognised.

Reflecting on our time in the woodland, Nikita wrote that reading my words about the shoot “genuinely moved” her, because it felt like I had captured “the essence of how I work and model in such a magical, respectful, and intuitive way.”

She described the experience not simply as being photographed, but as being understood — a collaboration where the camera became a quiet witness rather than a dominating presence. That sense of mutual respect and intuitive flow sits at the heart of Deep into the Wildwood.

Light, Woodland, and the Space Between

The forest is never a backdrop in this series. It is a living space that shapes how the work unfolds.

Looking back at the photographs, Nikita spoke about the use of natural light and the way each image is framed within the woodland itself — highlighting the model without overpowering the environment. She described the atmosphere as “fantasy dream like,” likening it to “stepping into a woodland realm straight out of Narnia.”

Particularly meaningful to her were the moments where dappled light moves across the skin, or where the light wraps around the body, accentuating shape and pose without force. These images, she felt, balanced softness and power — grounded and otherworldly at the same time.

A Shared Moment in the Forest

What stays with me most about Nikita’s reflections is her emphasis on the experience, not just the outcome. She spoke of the collaboration as something she truly cherishes — the work, yes, but also the quiet, magical hours spent in the forest making it.

That is exactly what Deep into the Wildwood is about: slowing down, listening to the landscape, and creating images that feel as though they belong to the place they were made.a beautiful, practical, and elegant way to preserve those memories.

Step Quietly… Then Step In

If you feel the pull of the trees and the hush of stories older than brick and asphalt, there is space for you in this series too. I’m always seeking individuals who are curious about stepping into the Wildwood and discovering who they might become there. Whether muse, warrior, wanderer or something entirely your own, the forest is waiting. Get in touch if you’d like to explore it with me and let’s create some mythical forest portraits together.

Life really is pretty good despite the horrors we are putting upon our wonderful world. I have the most wonderful wife who really makes me understand the value and meaning of marriage. And there is so much that brings joy - my dog, my cat, my hens, living in the countryside, folk music, ceildhs, going to gigs, sitting reading, watching the fire in the wood burner, the smell of air-dried laundry, the chatter of the birds in the garden, the swifts of summer and the snows of winter, the first butterfly of spring, the first frost of autumn, me, yes, me, I love me (and I'm proud to say that becuase it took a while), the feel of the summer air on my skin on the beach, sitting in the middle of the forest... and much much more. Life is wonderful and I wish that for you too.
