Family Photography at Hengistbury Head, Dorset, When Plans Change (and It Still Works Beautifully)

Create Lasting Memories with Family Photography

Last November I was invited to photograph something rather special — a three-generation family gathering, booked as a gift for the grandparents.

There were ten of them in total, aged from 13 to 76. Two daughters and their husbands. Four teenagers — including twin girls with the most beautiful long hair, and two boys in their early teens. It was one of those sessions that feels important before you’ve even lifted the camera.

The original plan had been to meet at Mudeford Sand Spit — photographing the family amongst the colourful beach huts, along the gently sloping shoreline, and beside the weathered groynes.

But sometimes, photography keeps you on your toes.

When the Family Photography Plans have to Change

On the day, the land train to the Spit wasn’t running. With accessibility in mind for the grandparents, that option disappeared immediately. We relocated to Hengistbury Head instead. The sun was bright and high, there was no soft shade like the beach huts would have offered, and the drop down to the beach was too steep for the older generation. From a technical point of view, it wasn’t ideal.

Harsh light. Limited shade. Tricky terrain.

But family photography isn’t about perfect conditions — it’s about people.
We adapted. I positioned them carefully, worked with the light rather than fighting it, and focused on connection.

We created portraits of the whole family together, each smaller family unit, and individual photographs of the teenagers.
At one point, one of the boys quietly asked for a photograph with his granddad. That image alone made the entire session worthwhile.

Natural Family Portraits That Mean Something

What matters most in family photography is not the backdrop — it’s the relationships.

Even with the unexpected changes, we created a beautiful mix of relaxed, natural images and gently posed portraits. There was laughter, closeness, and those small in-between moments that often become the most treasured.

Afterwards, the kind lady who booked the session wrote:

“We had the most wonderful family photo shoot with Jerry in November of this year. There were 10 of us aged from 13–76 and we now have such valuable memories in the form of the most stunning pictures, captured with heart by Jerry. We had a real mix of posed and natural shots, combinations of family units all in a stunning backdrop. Thank you, Jerry, we have treasured memories and we would not hesitate to thoroughly recommend you.”

Three generations. Four teenagers. Bright sunshine. A change of plan.

And in the end — a collection of photographs that will sit in frames, albums, and on walls for decades.

That’s what family photography in Dorset should be about.

Planning a Family Photography Session in Dorset?

This shoot was a Signature Session costing just £275, the most popular of the four different Family Photography Sessions we offer.

If you’re thinking about gathering the generations together — whether it’s a gift for grandparents, a milestone birthday, or simply because everyone happens to be in the same place at the same time — don’t wait for perfect logistics.

Weather changes. Plans shift. Locations adapt.

What matters is capturing your family as you are, right now.

Whether we’re on the beaches at Hengistbury Head, amongst the huts at Mudeford Sand Spit, or somewhere entirely different along the Dorset coast, we’ll guide you through the process calmly and confidently — creating a blend of natural, relaxed portraits and beautifully composed family images you’ll treasure for years.

Spring and autumn dates tend to book quickly for extended family sessions, so if you’re considering bringing everyone together this year, it’s worth starting the conversation sooner rather than later.

If you’d like to organise a multi-generation family photography session in Dorset, in Hampshire, in the New Forest, we’d love to hear from you.

Jerry Fenner

Life really is pretty good despite the horrors we are putting upon our wonderful world. I have the most wonderful wife who really makes me understand the value and meaning of marriage. And there is so much that brings joy - my dog, my cat, my hens, living in the countryside, folk music, ceildhs, going to gigs, sitting reading, watching the fire in the wood burner, the smell of air-dried laundry, the chatter of the birds in the garden, the swifts of summer and the snows of winter, the first butterfly of spring, the first frost of autumn, me, yes, me, I love me (and I'm proud to say that becuase it took a while), the feel of the summer air on my skin on the beach, sitting in the middle of the forest... and much much more. Life is wonderful and I wish that for you too.
