The Green Man Parade Returns to Burley, New Forest
A man dressed as the Green Man, a figure from folklore representing nature and rebirth, participates in a parade. He is adorned with green face paint, a hat decorated with feathers and blue accents, and a costume made of green fabrics and foliage. The Green Man is holding a wooden staff, and in the background, other participants and onlookers can be seen, including a woman with red hair shielding her eyes from the sun.

The New Forest has a rich history of old traditions

The New Forest has a rich history of old traditions, and the Green Man Parade has now been brought back to life in Burley. Bursting with colour, music, and leafy costumes, this celebration reconnects the village with an ancient ritual while bringing the community together. Simon Wood, founder of the Pagans of Ytene, shares the story behind the parade.

    Honouring the Spirit of Nature

“The Green Man is the embodiment of the spirit of nature,” says Simon. “He is a guardian of all life, ensuring that the old ways of nature are honoured and bringing forth fruitful harvests for all flora and fauna.” Inspired by Green Man parades around the country, Simon felt the New Forest deserved its own vibrant celebration.

    Bringing History to Life

Research uncovered that Burley once held a May Day parade in the 1850s, complete with a Jack in the Green entertaining children. “The difference between the Green Man and the Jack in the Green is minimal,” Simon explains. “The Green Man is the spirit of nature, the Jack is a humanised version of that spirit.” This historic connection formed the blueprint for the modern parade.

    A Colourful First Parade

The inaugural event in May 2024 was a spectacle of green paint, leaves, and dancing. Simon recalls, “We had hoped for 50 attendees, but 150-200 people turned up, all wearing green. Descendants of John Bromfield, who played the Jack in the Green 180 years ago, even attended and presented a crown to our Green Lady. It was a moment that brought history and community together in a way we hadn’t imagined.” Morris dancers, drummers, musicians, and the town crier added to the festive atmosphere.

    Growing Celebration

By 2025, the parade moved its final stop to the New Forest Cider Farm, attracting an estimated 400-450 visitors. Simon says, “Interest is growing, both locally and nationally. We want to keep it free for the public, encourage exploration of the village, and support local businesses.” With plans to expand and add surprises, the Green Man Parade promises to remain a joyous New Forest tradition for years to come.

Life really is pretty good despite the horrors we are putting upon our wonderful world. I have the most wonderful wife who really makes me understand the value and meaning of marriage. And there is so much that brings joy - my dog, my cat, my hens, living in the countryside, folk music, ceildhs, going to gigs, sitting reading, watching the fire in the wood burner, the smell of air-dried laundry, the chatter of the birds in the garden, the swifts of summer and the snows of winter, the first butterfly of spring, the first frost of autumn, me, yes, me, I love me (and I'm proud to say that becuase it took a while), the feel of the summer air on my skin on the beach, sitting in the middle of the forest... and much much more. Life is wonderful and I wish that for you too.
