Family Photography FAQs: What to expect from your Session
Family Photoshoot FAQs: Everything You Need to Know Before Your Session
A family photoshoot is one of those rare chances to pause time — to gather everyone together and capture a little slice of your life as it is right now. Whether you’re surrounded by wildflowers in the New Forest, walking along the Dorset coast, or playing with the kids under the Hampshire trees, these sessions are all about connection, laughter, and love.
To help you feel completely relaxed and ready, we’ve answered some of the most common questions we’re asked about our family photography sessions.
Where will our family photoshoot take place?
Our sessions happen outdoors or in the studio, it’s your choice though who’s attending might influence your decision. In the New Forest, Hampshire, or Dorset, amongst the trees, or on the coast where there’s space to breathe and light to play with. We’ll help you choose a location that suits your family best: maybe a favourite woodland walk, a windswept beach, or the garden you love most or something clssy in the studio.
If you already have a special place in mind, tell us — we love photographing families in spaces that mean something to them.
What should we wear for our photoshoot?
The best rule? Wear what feels like you.
Soft, natural colours tend to photograph beautifully — think earthy tones, creams, pastels, and denim. It’s nice when your family’s outfits complement rather than match exactly, and simple textures like linen, knitwear, or cotton always look timeless.
Try to avoid big logos or very bright colours, which can distract from faces. Layers are great too, especially if we’re outdoors — and they add visual interest. And bring along two or three different outfits so we can mix and match during the session.
How long does a family photoshoot take?
We offer sessiosn from just thirty minutes up to two hours and most sessions last around an hour, though we never rush. Children often need time to warm up, and that’s completely fine — those unplanned moments in between are often where the magic happens. And of course if we carry on too long, then the children are quick to let us know.
If we’re photographing an extended family, the session might run a little longer to make sure everyone gets their moment in the spotlight.
What happens if the weather isn’t great?
Ah, the joy of British weather! We always keep a close eye on the forecast, and if it’s truly awful, we’ll simply reschedule for another day.
That said, a bit of wind, mist, or soft drizzle can actually create beautiful atmosphere and light — so we don’t cancel unless we really need to.
When will we see our photographs?
You’ll receive your online gallery around two to three weeks after your session. From there, you can choose your favourites to download, print, or turn into a handcrafted photo album or wall piece.
We’ll guide you through your options and help you decide the best way to enjoy your photographs every day and you are welcome to visit our studio where you can see a lot of different wall pieces for you to imagine in your own home.
Can we bring grandparents or extended family?
Absolutely — we love extended family sessions. They tell a richer story, especially when different generations are together. Watching grandparents and grandchildren laugh together is pure gold, and those images become priceless heirlooms.
Just let us know who’ll be joining so we can plan your time and location perfectly. We do have a limit of about eight for our studio session – talk to us and let’s see.
Can we include our dog or pets?
Yes, please! Pets are family too, and they always bring a lovely energy to the session. Dogs are especially welcome — we’ll make sure they’re comfortable and part of the fun.
How do we book?
Booking is simple. Get in touch via our contact form or email, or use the WhatsApp box. and we’ll chat about your child, your preferred location, and the kind of feel you’d like from the session.
